Because the internet is for porn serious business porn, but you can't masturbate all the time:

Apparently lj got bought by the Russians? You probably knew this already if you pay any attention to lj news at all, but I don't tend to bother until they do something that annoys enough people to get it yelled about in fandom, so whatever.

Anyway, point is - and this is new - that Soviet LJ is no longer allowing the creation of new basic accounts - that is, the freebies with no ads. If you have one now you can keep it, but new journals have to be either paid or full of ads. (One nice side effect of all this - I learned about AdBlock and my internet is now a much nicer place.) People are unhappy enough about this alone, but the added bonus is that the Kremlin management didn't actually announce it in any straightforward way. Rather, it came up and was addressed in a quite condescending manner well into the comments on a different news post. And people seem to be at least as, if not more, angry about the way the whole thing's been handled as about the change itself.

Collection of relevant links here.

At the moment I'm mostly giggling because I get to make soviet Russia jokes, but I figured it might be worth bringing this to the attention of folks not yet aware of it.
